Adler: bio-architecture with coherence and balance

Designed by Hugo Demetz

Inspirations

At Adler Lodge Ritten, wood is far more than a surface. It is atmosphere, posture, silence — the invisible threshold between design and landscape.

Set at 1,200 meters on the Renon plateau, just above Bolzano, Adler Lodge Ritten blends into the Alpine scenery like a quiet refuge: dark timber façades, wide glass openings, views over the lake. Everything feels suspended, yet deeply rooted in place.

Ideas of living

Designed by architect Hugo Demetz, the project embraces the principles of bioarchitecture with a rare sense of coherence and restraint. Its dialogue with local culture recalls the work of Austrian master Clemens Holzmeister, who in 1926 designed the main wing of the original Adler Hotel in Ortisei.

The resort unfolds as a constellation of timber volumes: the Main Lodge, rising three stories, houses the communal spaces and wellness area; two pavilions host twenty junior suites, each with its own bio-sauna; and twenty independent chalets rest on the water’s edge, complete with fireplace and private sauna. The composition evolves in harmony with the forest — no theatrical gestures, just a natural conversation with the landscape. Around it, only trees and stillness.

On the ground floor, the spa, pool, steam bath and fitness area create a seamless flow between inside and out. Here, where water meets warmth and the body reconnects with itself, material authenticity becomes essential — both technical and sensorial.

For these interiors, the architects chose Fiemme Tremila, through the brand’s Bottega custom project: a knotty, hand-crafted oak with saw cut texture, used across floors, claddig, and ceilings. The result is a living surface — warm to the eye, tactile to the hand, capable of aging beautifully with time.

The cut reveals the raw grain of the wood, highlighting its imperfections with a sculptural touch. The effect is at once primitive and refined: the material breathes, absorbs light and shadow, and heightens a sense of visual and tactile comfort.

To ensure perfect stability in spaces subject to thermal shifts, humidity, and heavy use, the floors are built with Fiemme Tremila’s solid-wood Triplostrato® structure. The natural BioPlus® oil treatment, made from plat-based oils and resins, preserves the wood’s durability and healthiness — and even helps improove the indoor air quality.
