The restoration of Palazzo Maffei in Verona, hosting the Carlon Collection

The frame enclosing Piazza delle Erbe is one of the most beautiful in Italy, in the heart of a city, a symbol of charm and art: Verona. A bright white building stands out as a theatrical backdrop to this treasure, which closes the overall view and acts as the keeper and cantor of all the beauty of its surroundings.

Ideas of living

Palazzo Maffei was built in the seventeenth century as a “project that came from Rome”: the baroque splendour of the city is clearly visible in its spectacular and scenographic façade. Inside, the main floor of the building houses the Carlon Collection, which tells the story of art ranging from the Middle Ages right up to contemporary installations. The restoration has brought the building and its interiors which have had various intended uses over the years (the last one was the representative office of a bank), back to its original splendour of aristocratic residence. The perfect showcase to house all the works collected by Luigi Carlon. This is why Palazzo Maffei has become a “House of the Centuries”. Both for the architectural stratification, typical in a historical building, and for the journey through the history of art which takes place in the many exhibition rooms.

The main floor of 1000 square metres dedicated to the museum exhibition, with the exception of some rooms, were floored with Riflesso Fiemme Tremila oak, brushed and knot-free. The large-sized boards - 240 mm wide - were lined in a random straggered pattern, as was customary in the splendid Baroque halls when the palace was built.
