On the Yungui upland, in the northern part of Yunnan province, there is a villa made of wood and light, a place of eternal spring.
The city of eternal spring - that’s Kunming’s nickname, the provincial capital of Yunnan in south-central China. Due to its geographical location on the Yunnan - Guizhou upland, Kunming enjoys a mild climate and a considerable amount of sunshine throughout the year. In this paradise, located near the high-altitude Dian Lake (also known as the Sparkling Pearl), a villa embodies the wonders of the landscape and of the cherry blossom season.
The architect Yao Tang aimed to optimise the use of natural sunlight and create an indoor environment that was an extension of the outdoors. He followed the owners’ request to “enjoy flowers, greenery and sunshine both inside and outside.” A sunny house, fully and seamlessly representing the surrounding nature.
On these grounds, the large quantity of wood used cannot come as a surprise. Fiemme Tremila’s wood, with its essence Reale from the Boschi di Fiemme collection, was chosen for most of the villa’s floors. Sunlight filters indoors through various skylights and jalousie windows featuring glass slats that can be adjusted from the top and sides. Light interacts with natural materials, creating a multitude of effects and hues - sometimes bright, at other times calm and soothing, and during certain moments of the day, even artistic. In the words of its architect, the villa resembles Kunming’s climate: an eternal spring full of sunshine.
