Hospitality on the boards of a stage
Designed by studio Michaelis BoydLondon, UK
Daringly stylish atmospheres. Stepping into Indigo Hotel 1 Leicester Square in London is entering an alluring location. The beauty of art deco, the intense energy of the West End and the surrounding area, home of theatres and cinemas that have welcomed international premières and the greatest artistic productions, capture guests and visitors. The magic of the show is mirrored in the interior design, by the award-winning Michaelis Boyd architecture studio that brings to mind the charm and fine elegance of the Thirties, when the former Hotel 1 Leicester Square opened.
To respect the concept, we needed to recreate the stages of theatres built with wood boards, thus we opted for a wood flooring for the hotel interiors. We were looking for a chestnut, intense and deep colouring to add some softness and atmosphere to the elegant style of the environment. Fiemme Tremila oak gives continuity in the floors of the 95 rooms and of the panoramic rooftop restaurant.
Michaelis Boyd studio conceived four scenic designs, or theatre experiences. The Playwright’s studio rooms recreate the poetic space from a set designer’s inspiration, with written pages framed as if they were art works on the walls. The elegant Behind the scenes rooms “open the doors” to the stars’ dressing rooms who get ready to walk the stage – wardrobes, lighted make-up stations, spotlights and theatre curtain rope. The cosy atmospheres of the private stages are the protagonists of the Auditorium rooms and, finally, the Showtime rooms unveil lavish fabrics with a feeling of retro and evoke a real proscenium.
